Great Indoor Winter Workouts

Winter weather takes a toll on the exercise regimens of even the most dedicated fitness enthusiasts. Even New Year’s resolutions can crumble when faced with months on end of cold and nasty weather. If your clients are having trouble staying motivated when they’re stuck inside, here are some fun indoor activities you can recommend to help them keep moving toward their fitness goals.

Get strong

This is a great time for strength and resistance training at a nice, warm gym or in the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re working with weights or doing exercises that use your own body weight, you can build muscle and gain strength.

Tone your core

Check out yoga to strengthen your body and relax your mind at the same time. There are many different styles of yoga, so you may have to try some different types to see which one best suits your personality and preferences. Prefer a more straightforward fitness focus? Consider Pilates for flexibility and strength conditioning.

Try something sporting

There are plenty of sports that add some fun and competition to your workout. Indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, kickboxing, ice skating…even dodgeball! Many community centers or parks and recreation departments offer a slew of activities and sports to keep your blood pumping during the cold winter.

Jump in

Indoor pools are a great option for aerobic workouts in the off season. Swimming is a low-impact sport, so it’s easy on your joints.

Take yourself for a spin

Indoor cycling classes can be intense, but they offer a solid burst of exercise if you have the endurance. The movement helps strengthen and tone your lower body and core, plus you get aerobic benefits as well.

With a little planning and imagination, winter can be the perfect time to establish an effective and varied exercise habit.
